ローマといえば、街全体が世界遺産と言っても過言では無い
紀元前に栄えたローマ帝国時代から、水は繁栄の象徴と謳われてきた。
ビールの空き瓶やタバコの吸い殻 ゴミに溢れた街中であっても
噴水を見ただけで心に繁栄と癒しを与えてくれ、知的な食欲が起こる。
そんなローマで、幾度となく通ったナッツィオナーレ通りがある
以前はローマ三越があり、数えきれないくらい待合場所に使った思い出の場所である
レップブリカ広場の噴水を起点に、南西に1本の長いナッツィオナーレ通りがヴットリオ・エマヌエレ二世記念堂まで伸びている。
夕暮れ時には、西日がレップブリカの噴水にスポットライトの如く当たり、三千年に及ぶ民族の精神的態度を見てとることが出来る。
そんな夕暮れ時
ローマ三越から出てナッツィオナーレ通りを横切った瞬間だった
ローマの青信号は3秒しかもたない
信号を渡るほんの数秒 悟りが現前したかのような瞬間が訪れた。

何故ローマなのか
そしてローマと言えば、何故この写真なのか？
長い間私自身も疑問であり、解決しなければならない問題の一つであった。
過去に遡ると、18世紀イギリスの青年たちにとって政治、文化、芸術の学業の総決算として、
古代ローマや、ルネサンスで栄えたイタリアに赴き、学んだ大規模な国外旅行があった
その好機をグランドツアーと呼んだ。
グランドツアーに参加したカミーユ・コローというフランスの画家は、
「イタリアの女」という作品を残した。
何気なしに訪れた京橋の美術館で、カミーユ・コローの「イタリアの女」を見た瞬間
私の長年の重責が解決した。
私の形而上学は、過去の芸術家の愛撫によって、どこにもない道のりだったものが
一つの系譜を辿っていたのだ。
